On the 12th of January of 1967, nine nuns from the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Jean Antide Thouret took up residence at the "Master Divine Providence Home", formerly the Qrendi Royal Navy Rest Camp and later to be known as Id-Dar tal-Providenza. Sister Maria Assunta Mallia was the first superior of this community. The deeds that founded the "Dar tal-Providenza" were signed on January 21st 1967 between the British Services and the Malta Catholic Action and, subsequently, between the Government of Malta and the Malta Catholic Action.
The first residents of Id-Dar tal-Providenza arrived on the 11th of February 1968. From the very beginning of the Homes, one of the clauses in a set of rules written by Mgr Michael Azzopardi in the 16th of December of 1968 shows that the ultimate vision of the Homes has always been the integration of the disabled into society. This clearly sets the goals of the Hones: to upgrade the quality of life for all those residing at the homes.
During the funeral homily of the beloved founder of Id-Dar tal-Providenza at St. John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta, on the 14th of May 1987, Mgr Joseph Mercieca, Archbishop of Malta said: "...Go with your mind at rest...Rest assured, Dun Mikiel, that all initiatives started by you will be continued." Mgr Michael Azzopardi was received in the arms of the Lord on the 13th of May 1987. Most appropriately, he is buried at Id-Dar tal-Providenza.
Mgr Phillip Calleja, temporarily took over the running of the Homes, until Mgr Lawrence Gatt became the second Director on the 1st of July 1987.
Another villa for semi-independent residents named after the "Smiling Pope", Pope Luciani, was inaugurated on the 8th of September of 1987.
A new complex, named after Pope John XXIII was inaugurated on the 19th of March of 1974. This new complex was added to accommodate new residents.
On the 11th of February of 1997, four residents move to "Zerniq" in Mons. Mikiel Azzopardi Street, a house in the village of Siggiewi, to experience "Supported Living" in a homely environment. |
