MSCT Now Owns Its Home! Due to a mortgage closure at their present Mississauga location, the Malta Band Club decided to sell their original home on Medland Street. However, they wanted their property to be kept in Maltese hands. THe Club gave the Society first option to but the property, ANother and more important reason given was that the SOciety had given birth to the Band. After discussing the possibility of purchasing the building with its membership, the M.C.S.T.'s executive committee was given the sanction by the general membership to buy the 100 year old building. The Malta Band Club also had to meet with its membership to get permission to sell the building and preferably to the Society. Permission was granted and the lengthy negotiations commenced. Those directly involved on this large undertaking were: Malta Band CLub President Emmanuel Micallef, Treasurer Charles Azzopardi and Secretary Charles Dimech, Public Relations Director, Richard Cumbo, Treasurer Joe Costa and M.C.S.T. President Charles Grixti were their counterparts. During the ten month long negotiation process, other committee members from each club attended some meetings as well. Amongst these were M.C.S.T.'s John Zammit and Mike Grech and Malta Band Club's Tony Vella and Charlie Xuereb. Lawyer Terrance Burrell, of the law firm Zammit, Dash and Semple worked on behalf of the M.C.S.T. and Jeffrey Halman of the firm Carbonaro, Kligerman and Sugar acted on behalf of the Malta Band Club. Complications arose through no fault of either party or law firms. However, through perseverance, patience and an amiable attitude the deal was finally closed on January 9th, 2001. Ms. Elvira Pereira of Metro Credit Union was instrumental in obtaining a reasonable interest rate for the Society. Now the work begins and the Society must meet its mortgage commitments. A dedicated committee and supportive membership have agreed to work hard to see the Society off to a new start in the 21st century. After its long and rich history and important contributions to all Maltese-Canadians, the oldest still functioning Maltese organization in North America now has a permanent home! |
