How old must I be to join the Sea Cadets?

You are eligible to join if your have reached your 12th but not your 19th birthday.

How old must I be to join the Navy League Cadets?

You are eligible to join if your have reached your 9th but not your 13th birthday.

What are the requirements for membership?

All potential cadets must be interested in the program and prepared to attend regularly. Parent's permissions is also required.

Do I need a medical certificate?

If you are joining the Sea Cadets, you must produce evidence of physical fitness. Sea Cadets must also have a doctor's certificate before going to camp, undertaking sea training or other special assignments.

What will it cost to join?

Nothing - but you may be asked to join in fund raising activities such as parades, etc. You may also be asked to contribute towards special activities such as pizza nights or trips. However, in most cases, all costs are covered.

Must I buy my own uniform>?

No. Complete uniforms are loaned to cadets. You are, of course, expected to keep the uniform looking clean and neat.

Will participating in the cadets detract from my school work?

Cadets usually meet only one night a week and the instructions are designed to supplement your school studies. Participating in other activities, such as the band, may require additional meetings during the week. Most competitions take place during weekends.

The cadet programs have proven to be a valuable addition to resumes and when applying to universities.

Do the cadets receive pay?

Sea Cadets receive pay when employed as staff at summer camps. Cadets who attend summer camp as course cadets also receive a training bonus for each successful week completed during the summer. All cadets also receive valuable educational benefits, trips to camp, free sailing and sea courses, bonuses for successfully completing certain full time courses and other rewards.

What do cadets learn?

Cadets study seamanship, sailing range and other subjects designed to assist them in preparing for future careers.

What are my chances for promotion within the cadet ranks?

Promotion with the cadet ranks is based on merit. Promising young men nd women are given command positions and encouraged to develop qualities of leadership.

Who sponsors the cadet programs?

Every corps is supported by a civilian committee (the Branch) of the Navy League of Canada made up of business and professional men and women interested in youth programs. The Sea Cadet Program is also partially funded and supported by the Department of National Defence Canada.

Who instructs the cadets?

Cadets are instructed by ex-Service personnel, school teachers, Senior Corps Cadets, former Sea Cadets and other persons willing to devote time to this worthwhile activity.

Can I go to camp in the summer?

Navy League Summer Camp are held each year. Camp is usually held in the various Ontario regions. Transportation and food is provided. Parents may be asked to make a small contribution towards the cost of the camps.

Sea Cadet Summer Camps are held each year across the country. They are two to six weeks long and offer a varied program of outdoor sports in addition to valuable instruction of a Maritime nature.

Sea Cadet Summer camps are free and transportation to and from the camps is provided. All food and accommodation is also provided.

Are Sea Cadets permitted to go to sea?

Yes. While at summer camp, all Sea Cadets are given familiarization instruction in sail and power vessels.

Are there any advanced training courses for Sea Cadets?

Yes. In addition to a special Senior Leaders Course, summer courses are provided in Athletic Leadership, Sailing, Seamanship and other subjects to prepare cadets for future positions of leadership, either in the Sea Cadet movement or other fields. Cadets are selected for the valuable training in the basis of regular attendance and good service with the corps.

What about sea training?

Sea Cadet training is available on Naval, Coast Guard and Department of the Environment vessels.

Are there travel opportunities for Sea Cadets?

Yes. Sea Cadets travel to camps and courses held in different parts of Canada and each year groups of Sea Cadets visit the United States and other countries.

Can Sea Cadets obtain summer employment?

Yes. Senior Sea Cadets who are properly qualified, often find that summer camps offer worthwhile summer employment opportunities - a chance to "earn while you learn".

Are Sea Cadets expected to join the Canadian Forces?

No. Sea Cadets have absolutely no commitment regarding future military training. However, those who do join the Canadian Forces have a big advantage over other applicants.

What is the main purpose of cadets training?

While cadet corps are organized along naval lines, the primary aim us to produce better Canadian citizens - the kind who understand the responsibility of citizenship and are prepared to accept it when the need arises.
